Description
Are you a bowler and looking for a unique Christmas ornament craft? We have instructions to make a special Styrofoam ball craft. It is a simple bowling ball Christmas ornament. The best part about this holiday craft, it is quick and inexpensive to make!
The photos do not do this ornament justice. It is quite nice looking in person.
Materials and Supplies
Craft Supplies:
- Styrofoam ball*
- Paintbrush
- Pencil with new eraser
- Eye hook
- Acrylic paint; two colors that compliment each other**
- White glue
*Our sample was made with a 1.25" Styrofoam ball but you can use any size you want.
** When choosing your paint colors, you should use two that, when mixed, make a third color (ex red and yellow make orange; yellow and blue make green)
Craft Instructions
- You can use any size Styrofoam ball you want depending on how large you want your bowling ball to be. Using the eraser end of a pencil, make three indents in the ball.
- If you want the bowling ball to be a solid color, simply paint the whole thing with that one color as pictured above (our black bowling ball) and skip to step #4.
- If you prefer a swirl effect, it is important to choose two colors that when mixed, make a third color. To make the swirl bowling ball, paint the whole ball including the inside of the three holes with one color. In our orange/yellow/red sample, we painted the entire Styrofoam ball yellow. While the paint was still wet, we came back in with red paint and painted over the yellow paint using a swirling motion. To make the holes stand out, do not add a second color to the inside of the holes.
- Let dry completely. It is helpful to stick a toothpick into the Styrofoam ball and stick the other side of the toothpick into a foam block while it dries.
- Once dry, dip the end of an eye hook into white glue and then push the glued end into the top of the bowling ball. Attach an ornament hook to the eye hook and your bowling ball is ready to be hung on the tree!
