Description
Inexpensive Valentine's day craft idea - heart shaped magnets. One bucket of craft foam hearts will make MANY magnets. This is a fun simple craft project that isn't too messy.
Materials and Supplies
Craft Supplies:
- Self Stick* craft foam hearts in 4 sizes
- Glue dots or white glue
- 7mm and 10mm googly eyes
- Silver pipe cleaners
- Fine or ultra fine tip permanent black marker
- Red string of pearls
- Magnet strip
*If you don't have self stick hearts you can use regular craft foam and either hot glue or glue dots to assemble the magnets.

Craft Instructions
Bird
- One 1 1/2" pink heart
- One 2" Pink heart
- Two 1" pink hearts
- Three 3/4" red hearts
- One 3/4" white heart
- Two 10mm googly eyes
- Lay the 2" pink heart right-side up but with the heart upside down on your work surface.
- Peel the back of the 1 1/2" pink heart and holding it in the same direction as the 2" heart, overlap and press it onto the 2" heart as pictured. This is the bird's head.
- Peel half of the paper off of one of the 1" pink hearts and holding it the same direction as the other hearts, stick it to the 2" heart for a wing. Repeat with the other 1" pink heart for the second wing. Note: you will peel the paper off of the right side of one heart and the left side of the other heart.
- Peel and stick the white heart on top of the 1 1/2" pink heart as pictured for the beak.
- Now, attach one 3/4" red heart, right side up to the back of your birds head - do not peel off any of the paper from the red hearts.
- Peel a little of the paper off the two bumps on the 2" pink heart and stick the point ends of the remaining two red hearts to this area for feet.
- Attach a 1" piece of magnet to the back of the 2" pink heart. To do this, just peel the paper off the heart where you would like to attach the magnet and stick it on.
- Glue two 10mm googly eyes (or attach with glue dots) to the birds head above the white beak.
Butterfly
- Two 2" red hearts
- One 1 1/2" white heart
- Two 3/4" pink hearts
- Two 2 1/2" pieces of silver pipe cleaner
- 1/4" Pink pompom
- Two 10mm googly eyes
- 2" Length of string pearls
- Peel the back off the 1 1/2" white heart and place it on your work surface sticky side up. This is the body
- With wrong sides facing up, stick the two 2" red hearts onto the white heart with points touching and meeting in the center of the white heart. The red hearts will be perpendicular to the white heart. These are the wings.
- Press the string of pearls onto the white heart below the red hearts.
- Cut two 2 1/2" pieces from a silver pipe cleaner
- Wrap the middle of the pipe cleaners around a pencil to give it a little curl but keep both ends straight.
- Attach one end of each piece of pipe cleaner to the top of the white heart so they stick out the top of your butterfly
- Peel the paper off just the pointed ends of the red hearts and press a 1" piece magnet onto the red hearts
- Turn your butterfly over. Attach 2 googly eyes and one pompom to the front of the white heart using either white glue or glue dots.
- Draw a mouth and eyebrows with a permanent marker.
- Peel the back off the two 3/4" pink hearts an stick one on top of each antenna.
If you have trouble with the string of pearls or the pipe cleaners staying in place you can use hot glue.
Flower
- Two 1 1/2" white hearts
- Two 1 1/2" pink hearts
- One 1 1/2" red hearts
- Two 3/4" pink hearts
- Two 7mm googly eyes
- One 5mm pink pompom
- Silver pipe cleaner
- Lay the two white and two pink hearts face up on your work surface with the 4 points meeting in the center and place a 4" piece of silver pipe cleaner between two of the hearts.
- Peel the back off the red heart and stick it on top of the group of hearts being sure the point of the red heart is over the pipe cleaner
- Turn the flower over and attach a 1" piece of magnet to the back of the flower by peeling a little of the paper off the hearts on the back - just where you want to stick the magnet.
- Turn the flower back over so it is right side up. Peel and stick the two 3/4" hearts to the pipe cleaner
- Attach two googly eyes and a pompom nose to the red heart using glue dots or white glue.
- Draw a mouth and eyebrows with a permanent marker
Dog
- Two 2" pink hearts
- Two 1 1/2" pink hearts
- Two 1" pink hearts
- One 3/4" white heart
- Peel the back off one of the 2" hearts and place sticky side up on your work surface
- Lay the two 1 1/2" hearts on the 2" heart so that only one of the bumps of each heart shows on the front side. These are the dog's ears.
- Attach the Other 2" heart to the first 2" heart so that just the point of the second heart attaches to the first heart below where you attached the ears. This forms the body.
- Flip your dog over and peel and stick the two 1" pink hearts upside down to the body of your dog . These form the front paws.
- Peel and stick the white heart, upside down, to the dog's head.
- Attach two 10mm googly eyes using glue or glue dots and draw on a mouth using a permanent marker.
- Attach a 1" piece of magnet to the back of your dog by peeling off some of the paper from the body heart and sticking the magnet to its.
Fish
- One 2" white heart
- Two red and one white 1" hearts
- One red and one pink 3/4" hearts
- One 10mm googly eye
- Lay the 2" white heart on your work surface so that it is sideways with the point of the heart facing the left.
- Attach the two red 1" hearts to the point of the white heart so that the point on the red hearts tough each other and the sides of the red hearts touch the white heart on either side of the point. Attach these with either glue dots or hot glue. This forms the tail.
- Peel the back off the 3/4" red heart and stick on top of the tail where the two red hearts meet (as pictured).
- Peel and stick the 1" white heart to the 2" white heart as pictured.
- Peel and stick the 3/4" pink heart to the 2" white heart as pictured forming the fishes mouth.
- Glue on one 10mm googly eye using glue dots or white glue and draw eyelashes above the eye using a permanent black marker.
- Peel some of the paper off the back of the fish and attach a 1" piece of magnet to it.
