Description

If you have young children in the house, these snowman ornaments made from Styrofoam balls are a safer choice than breakable glass ornaments and quick to make.

Materials and Supplies

Craft Supplies:

  • Aleene's True Snow or Glitter Snow
  • Popsicle stick or a disposable plastic knife
  • Two 2" Styrofoam balls
  • Fleece
  • Orange paint in squeeze bottle (fabric paint works fine)
  • 10 Small black beads or black paint in a squeeze bottle
  • Hot glue
  • 1 1/2" Piece of Pipecleaner
  • White glue
  • Skinny stick
  • Tiny clear hair elastic or a piece of string
  • Elastic thread
  • Screw eye - for the hatless snowman
  • Styrofoam block or empty box

Craft Instructions

  1. Gently squeeze one of the two Styrofoam balls in your hand to compress the Styrofoam and make it slightly smaller than the other ball.
  2. Cut a 1 1/2" piece off the pipe cleaner. Dip one end in white glue and push it halfway into one of the Styrofoam balls.  Dip the other end of the pipe cleaner into white glue and stick it into the other Styrofoam ball.
  3. Insert the Skinny Stick into the bottom of the larger Styrofoam ball.  You will use this stick to hold your snowman while you work on him.
  4. Using a popsicle stick or plastic knife, cover both Styrofoam balls with the True Snow or Glitter Snow.  If you are making your snowman without a hat, insert a screw eye in the top of the smaller Styrofoam ball before the Glitter Snow dries.  Insert the stick into a block of Styrofoam or make a small hole in an empty box (such as a tissue box or shoe box) and insert the stick in the hole*.  Leave the snowman like this until completely dry.
  5. Cut a  9" x 3/4" piece of fleece and tie it around your snowman's neck as a scarf.  Cut the ends at an angle.
  6. Cut a 3" x 6" piece of fleece for a hat.  Using the hot glue gun, overlap and glue the two shorter ends forming a tube.  If you prefer, you can sew this. Gather one end of the tube and either wrap a small hair elastic around it or tie it tightly with a piece of string. Fold the other end of the tube up to form a cuff.
  7. Place the hat on your snowman and hot glue in place.  Thread an 8" piece of elastic thread through the top of the hat as a hanger and tie the ends in an overhand knot.
  8. Make a face and buttons for your snowman.  See options below.  Brush the cheeks with powdered blush.

* If you want to use beads for the face and  buttons, stick them into the True Snow or Glitter Snow while it is still wet.  Refer to the picture for placement.

You have several choices for the facial features:

  1. For the eyes, mouth and buttons, you can use small black beads placed in the True Snow or Glitter Snow while it is still wet.
  2. Use paint in squeeze bottles to paint on the facial features and buttons - see instructions below.
  3. Stick two 7mm googly eyes into the glitter snow as eyes instead of using beads for eyes.
  4. You can either paint the nose on or cut a small piece of orange pipe cleaner, fold it into a v and push the two cut ends into the Styrofoam ball before the True Snow or Glitter Snow dries.

To paint a mouth, eyes and buttons, squeeze dots out onto the dried True Snow or Glitter Snow.

To paint a carrot nose, use orange paint in a squeeze bottle.  Start by squeezing a ball of paint then release pressure as you move the paint bottle to one side.

For an ornament you would remove the Skinny Stick now.  If you want your snowman to be a plant stake, leave the Skinny Stick in the snowman and place the other end of the stick into a plant.
